Patrons show concern for Salem School

Patrons of the Salem School are preparing for a public forum to gather information about the future of their elementary building. Although the closing of the school was just one of several possibilities being considered to help make up for a nearly $1 million budget cut, parents and school supporters don’t want to take any chances.

A public meeting will take place Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Salem Community Center. According to Salem School patron Dave Helman, Salem residents who have an interest in the school called for the meeting.

“A number of parents who live in the school district are concerned that, among the proposals that the superintendent has put before the school board to make up the shortfall in funding is to close Salem Elementary School,” Helman said. “Several parents got together and spoke to the superintendent and asked how they could be heard and convey their views. The superintendent gave them names and addresses to write.”

Helman said that a lot of people have shown concern about the possibility of a school closing in Salem, so a meeting has been called to properly convey the importance of the school.

“It’s been on the table in years past,” Helman said. “But the school board said that it was an important little school and they were not going to make any changes, but here we go again, suggesting that this remarkable little school be closed.”
